Since the start of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, I’ve been working on a blog called A Recipe for War. It explores the causes of the current crisis in Ukraine and any parallels that this shares with other times in history as well as current events. I’ve collaborated with professors Gennady Estraikh from NYU and Magda Teter from Fordham University to gain more insights into the conflict. In addition, this blog attempts to bring awareness to the lack of interest by both government and society in historical education, as well as false public perceptions of history currently gaining traction. If these trends continue, then there is no doubt that we will make the same mistakes that our ancestors once made, resulting in more wars, bloodshed, and tragedy as we are seeing in Ukraine today. I hope that this blog will in some way prevent this from happening, and make people realize that knowledge of our past and the root causes of today’s issues will give us the ability to fix them. Given my family history as refugees fleeing from Ukraine on several separate occasions, I also use this blog as an opportunity to discuss my family’s history in connection to what we are currently seeing unfold today on the global stage. This blog is very personal on more than just one level as it details my family’s past, and through that, my hopes for the future. These hopes can only be secured through collective knowledge of history and a collective effort to learn from what only history can teach as a mirror projecting our innermost motivations, challenges, and choices going forward.
